Avoid Making Poor Career Decisions That Will Waste Your Time

A wrong career decision can send you in a direction or career path that can take you years to recover from.  Unfortunately, I see this happen to many in China who are in jobs or doing things that they don’t enjoy or have little real interest in pursuing further.  For many, it’s because they made naive or uninformed choices early in their career, where they didn’t understand or consider very deeply what they were actually getting into.  Actually, I nearly made a decision early in my career that would have been a huge mistake for me.  Luckily though, I avoided it.

Almost Making The Wrong Decision For Myself

When I was 26 and decided I no longer wanted to continue my career as an engineer, there was a period of time when I considered becoming a lawyer.  I even applied to law school and got in.  My idea was to represent the poor and underprivileged, and battle injustice in the world.  My image of being a lawyer was extremely idealistic.

While waiting to go to law school, however, I spoke with several lawyers who were practicing law.  Each one expressed the same thing.  They all enjoyed law school and felt the study of law to be both interesting and challenging.  But while being a lawyer offered them a very good career, nobody seemed to speak about their job with much enthusiasm or passion.  Like me, they initially had a romantic view of what practicing law was all about.  They also pictured themselves involved in dramatic courtroom cases or working on exciting deals.

Narrowly Avoiding A Completely Different Career Path

But practicing law was much different.  Most spent the majority of their time performing research and looking through volumes of documents and books filled with legal cases.  They painstakingly reviewed legal contracts, or filled out and submitted applications for clients.  Although it was important work, the drama and excitement didn’t exist for most of those who actually practiced law.

I’m not trying to imply that the practice of law isn’t a rewarding and fascinating career.  Only that after speaking with several lawyers about what they did, I realized that my own personality and personal objectives were not a good fit for this career track.  Because of these conversations, I eventually decided not to attend law school.  Although a great career for many, it would have been the wrong one for me.  A year later, I attended business school instead.

Given your lack of experience and exposure early in your career, it’s not unusual to have a limited understanding of a situation or career path that you want to pursue.  But if you want to make good decisions for your career and avoid situations that you won’t be happy or successful in, then you need to do your homework and get whatever information you can to build your understanding of what you’re considering to get into.  Because when you find yourself later on in a job or career track that you feel desperate to leave, it’s not going to make you feel any better to think to yourself, ““This is not at all what I thought it would be like.”
